COOL AND CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT SOUSUKE SMILES:

1) He has smiled at least 20 times so far, and about 90% of those are directed at Rin.
2) He’s also smiled at: Gou and Nitori.
3) and a smile full of contempt and sarcasm for Haru
4) His smile may or may not be a defence mechanism: he also smiles when he’s thoughtful, resigned, sad, being sarcastic.

Protect Sousuke Yamazaki smile at all costs.

after going through the sou/haru tag i noticed something that had completely went past me before, and is that in sousuke’s confrontation to haru, the latter seems genuinely shocked and distraught over his attitude.

I think Rin’s understanding of sousuke is getting further away, and the way episode 7 opens is a proof of that. I mean, when he replies that what he was looking at is “Phantoms of the past, or something…” Rin’s expression completely changes, even though Sousuke’s smiling when he says so.

Sousuke keeping his injury from Rin, and most of all trying to keep it from everyone strikes me as him having actual hope of being healed and being able to continue swimming competitively in the future.

I can’t stop thinking about the reasons why Sousuke came to Samezuka in the first place, and stepping back for a minute and rewatching all the nine episodes that are out so far I’m thinking this has a lot less to do with Rin personally.
I wonder if Sou would’ve come to Samezuka if he wasn’t injured, if he would’ve returned. For how long has he known about this injury? Did he know since the time of the relay? or did he find out afterwards? during the conversation he has with Rin where he asks him about what’s more important to him.. it doesn’t seem as if he’s accusing him, it’s as if he’s seeking validation from him and his own motives.
He wants to know that he made the right choice by swimming himself to that point, because he wants to confirm that working his hardest until the very end was what was needed to reach a dream, to reach a goal. A goal he believed he had in common with Rin, so for him the relay is not entirely about Rin. His interest only comes up after he’s denied of what he thought defined them both.
In a matter of minutes, in this conversation, he learns something: There are more valid reasons for swimming. His best friend teaches him that, and he’s willing to prove it to him. It feels like he’s seeking alternatives to continue swimming, if he can’t swim competitively anymore it doesn’t mean he has to quit. Rin swims for his friends, and maybe if he swims in a relay with him he can find that passion too.
He makes it clear from the start (in the flasback) that for him friends are a secondary matter to his swimming, even making the reference about how being buddy buddy won’t help you win races and I think this is something that stayed within him up until the points he meets Rin again, Sousuke’s lonely, and most likely by his own choice.
I think what Rin does is he deconstructs the idea that his dreams are fixed, and that there is only one way to achieve that type of success. He broadens his horizons by showing him his own personal dream about his friends, the relay, the importance of camaraderie and friendship and the transcendence of doing something because it’s fun.
Prior to him deciding to enter the relay, he was not swimming with the team in competitions. Which i think suggests that he wasn’t planning on risking himself or causing himself any further injuries, but when he finds an alternative to the reason why he swims he endangers himself by signing up for the relay, it’s because he’s seeking another choice to give his life meaning from this point on, he’s considering that maybe what he’s learned and thought and grew up on until now is not there anymore.
Sousuke’s surviving.
I think he needed to be with Rin, no matter what, but he’s also a man of action and doing not a man of talking, for him talking about something may have not sufficed, which is why he wanted to swim and find his new reason for it. Rin is the bridge between him and finding a new way of life, but it’s not the way he’s walking through it. He just doesn’t seem to realize it, he’s too focused on finding an answer.
He is so proud of Rin, he’s so completely filled with expectations for him and his future, his olympic future. One that he’s coming to terms with he may not have himself, but that doesn’t mean he won’t support him until the end.
Sousuke didn’t enter the relay for Rin, sousuke didn’t injure himself further for Rin. Rin’s showing him a new way of life, a new ideal, a new future and he’s trying to grasp it but in the process he doesn’t realize he’s not going about it the right way.
His love (whatever type you want to classify it as: romantic, platonic, as friends) for Rin is important because it’s giving him strength, it’s also inspiring him and opening him up and broadening his horizons, it’s making him more social, more approachable, more interested in those around him, more invested in helping his teammates. Sousuke’s changing for himself, because of Rin. Not for Rin.

soumatsuoka:

i think that most of their problems stem from their lack of communication, which is both one of the pro’s of their friendship but also a big con. They rely too much on an implicit understanding of each other to actually sit down and talk about the important things.

Sousuke blames Haru, and perhaps Iwatobi in general mildly, because he knows the influence he has on Rin, but what he doesn’t know is the emotional importance of the relay, because when Rin stopped sending letters to Sousuke he thoughts things were okay. He wasn’t up to speed with whatever happened to Rin in Australia so when he sees him again it’s as if they’ve picked everything up and they don’t account for the fact that the both of them have grown and changed in their time apart. He blames Haru;s influence because he can’t seewhy that scenario would ever be possible if it wasn’t Haru’s doing.

I’m not justifying Sousuke, though, just trying to point out that he acts on whatever limited information he has. I think this is a lot like (in sou’s mind) to having your friend date someone who you know holds them back, or isn’t the best in regards to their future but you know you can’t do much about it. In Sou’s mind, at this point, the olympics and Rin’s competitive swimming future is still the number thing for him, he’s only coming to terms with that changing and Rin’s inclusion of other things in his future but he’s doing his best to understand him and i think that’s valuable and important to their dynamic.

The unhealthiness stems, mostly, from the fact that Rin isn’t putting his part in the work of the friendship, he’s taking things for granted and is okay and well in the semi-balance that they’re maintaining. However, that’s not bad, it’s a room for improvement for Rin and that’s what Sousuke can be, that’s the beauty of their friendship. it’s also important because Rin connects Sousuke to a lot of things: friends, family, teammates. it’s through his influence that he attemps to be more social and open towards the people around him, so Rin IS a positive influence on him after all.

Sousuke’s case isn’t that atypical, there’s plenty of athletes who hide their injuries, and in his case i’m pretty sure it’s not all because of Rin. He’s hiding it from everyone it seems, not just him. Perhaps even his parents (he may be 17/18 but he still went alone to see the doctor). sousuke strikes me as a the type of person who wants to solve everything himself and thinks he can handle it (much like Haru’s like that too) and he doesn’t want to appear or seem weak.

When Kisumi finds out, he’s angry because someone knows, the chances of him telling anyone he knows were very low but he’s still angry that he finds out, even if he come cleans about it.  I think that Sousuke didn’t return to Samezuka just for Rin, though he’s definitely an important reason and i also don’t think he swims just for Rin, despite his injury, he also has a motive we haven’t quite heard about - of that I’m sure.

There’s a lot of downsides to their relationship but fortunately these are things that can be talked about and solved - the truth will come out and things will be handled accordingly. Also unlike some people think I think the shoulder injury can open a drift between them because of the guilt that Rin will feel, it can push them apart rather than bring them close together however even that will make them both grow as persons and human beings.

I think they can walk the line of friends and maybe something more for years without ever doing anything about it, and it’s that possibility that opens their relationship to endless scenarios. It’s how much they can learn from each other and grow together. How Sousuke is understanding and tries to figure Rin out, and how Rin brings so many positive things that give Sousuke cohesion as well as an understanding of goals they share.
